Soil Association

The Soil Association was founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists who observed a direct connection between farming practice and plant, animal, human and environmental health.

Today, we are the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use. We have over 150 staff based in Bristol and Edinburgh and working as certification inspectors across the country. The Soil Association's Chief Executive is Helen Browning, who reports to the Council of Trustees.

We wrote some of the world’s first organic standards over 50 years ago and developed the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) which was launched in 2006 and which Soil Association Certification now certify to. GOTS is the only internationally recognised organic textile processing standard ensuring organic integrity at every step of the supply chain, from harvesting though production, processing, manufacturing and labelling. GOTS means social and environmental compliance, requiring organically grown fibres, eco-friendly processing and social responsibility throughout manufacture.

You might expect something so vital to be organised and supported by the government. But in fact the Soil Association is a charity, reliant on donations and on the support of its members and the public to carry out its work.

Soil Association Certification

Soil Association Certification is the UK's largest organic certification body, responsible for certifying over 70% of all organic products sold in the country. We certify organic food and farming, organic textiles and organic beauty products. Since 1973 our team has built up extensive practical experience and provide unrivalled support before, during and after certification.

We’ve been working on organic textiles for over 10 years, and played a leading role in the development of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) which we quarter own and which Soil Association Certification now certify to.

The Soil Association organic logo on pack is the most recognised in the UK and your customer's guarantee that your produce meets the highest standards of sustainability and quality.
